The Consumer Rights Project at Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is seeking two part-time contract attorneys for an “Eviction Prevention Legal Residency” program launched jointly by the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  As rents and evictions skyrocket, the lightning pace of Nevada’s unique summary eviction legal processes have highlighted the imbalance and hardship for so many in our valley. Funding for this special program has been provided by the State of Nevada to increase the legal assistance available to residents of Clark County for housing matters and to educate new attorneys about representing tenants impacted by the housing crisis.

Court appearances will be in Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas Justice Courts. Each part-time contract attorney will work with Boyd law student attorneys to counsel, assist, and represent tenants facing evictions in Clark County. Part-time contract attorneys will supervise and mentor law student attorneys and work with Boyd faculty to teach law student attorneys, assist in their development of fundamental lawyering skills, and support their desire to be advocates for justice.

The candidate must be a licensed attorney with at least five years litigation experience in good standing from any United States jurisdiction (Nevada offers special licensing for attorneys relocating to Nevada to provide legal services through Legal Aid Center) and able to meet the requirements of a supervising lawyer under Nevada Supreme Court Rule 49.3.  Experience appearing in Justice Court is preferred.  The ability to speak Spanish is beneficial.

Additional qualities desired:

  • Desire to provide legal information to people who might need extra patience understanding their legal issue
  • Desire to teach and inspire law students
  • Ability to understand the lives and struggles confronting low-income and vulnerable people in our community

Contract is $60,000.
